Meta will begin deactivating under-16 social media accounts on December 4, one week ahead of Australia’s mandated December 10 social media age ban. The company is warning approximately half a million users across Facebook, Instagram and Threads to download their data before accounts are blocked, though Messenger will remain available and accounts can be recovered when users turn 16. Australia’s E-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant has been summoned to testify before US Congress, with Republican lawmaker Jim Jordan labelling her a zealot and calling Australia’s Online Safety Act a foreign censorship regime.
